FUN ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE GOOD SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SKILLS

This month as you are doing these everyday activities involve your child as described below

ACTIVITY:	GET OUTSIDE	DECORATE THE HOUSE	INDOOR GAMES	Use your old toys in a different way
WEEK 1:	Get on your coat and give your child a place to run.  “run to the tree and jump 5 times” “run to the shed and hop on one foot 5 times”	Work on your cutting skills and make some paper snowflakes.	Balloon tap: Tap the balloon back and forth to each other as you count and see how long you can keep it up in the air.  Start over again when the balloon hits the floor.	Soft toy toss:  Find 10 soft toys and a laundry basket.  Stand on a spot and toss the toys in the basket one at a time.  Talk about using an “under hand” throw.  After your child throws 3 toys, move the spot back a little and see if your child can make it from further back.
WEEK 2:	Have a race.  Practice moving in a straight line, move your arms front and back, and land lightly on your feet.  Celebrate finishing the race!	Go on a scavenger hunt around the house.  See how many snowmen (or santas or bells) you can find.  Where are they?  Use words like “on the shelf” “beside the door”	Balloon toss:  Toss the balloon back and forth, catching it this time.  Think of a category such as animals and name an animal each time you catch the balloon.	Soft toy toss advanced:  Line up the 10 toys and give directions about which one to grab first:  “Get the one that is little and white”, “get the one that has whiskers and long ears”.  Then give it a toss.
WEEK 3:	Get outside for a game of tag.  Put a scarf in your back pocket and see if your child can grab it.  Take turns having the scarf in your pocket and your child’s pocket.	Talk about the Christmas tree.  Where is the star (or angel or bow)?  Use words like “at the top”  Find a red decoration on the tree.  Where is it?  Is it at the bottom, middle, top, front, or back of the tree?	INDOOR ACTION GAME: Use the attached action word list and location in your house list to play this game:  Put the action words in a box and put the locations in another box.  Choose a paper out of each.	Soft toy toss advanced +:    Have your child give you directions as you take turns tossing the soft toys.  Use choices to help your child use descriptive words:  “Should I get the one that is blue or white”
WEEK 4:	Practice jumping on the sidewalk.  See if you can jump over the cracks.	Make a paper chain to put around the tree.  Work on writing numbers on strips of paper and staple them into a ring, attaching one to the other.  Remove the highest number first and ask, “how many days until Christmas”?  Keep going every day.	INDOOR ACTION GAME CONTINUED: Ask these questions after you pick a paper, “what do you have to do”?, “where are you going to do it”?  Go to that place and complete the action	Sort your Legos by color.   Try using a divided tray like a vegetable tray.  Put one of each color into each spot.  Give your child the box of Legos and let them sort.

Cut out the attached pictures and try the activities that I have checked below:

VERBAL EXPRESSION AND CATEGORIZATION ACTIVITIES:

Have your child name the pictures that you show him/her.

 

Ask your child, “what do you do with a ____”

Encourage your child to say longer sentences.  For example,if they say, “eat”, say “yes, we eat turkey. Can you say, I eat turkey.”

 

Ask your child, “where can you find a ___”

Encourage your child to say longer sentences.  For example,if they say, “closet”, say “yes, your pants are in the closet. Can you say, in the closet.”

 

Sort the pictures into 3 separate piles. Use category words, say “let’s put all the foods in this pile, all the furniture in this pile and all the clothes in this pile.  After they are sorted ask your child, “what is the name of this group”?

 

Place 4 pictures in front of your child (3 from one group and one that is not a member of the group).  Ask, “which one does not belong”? Why?

 

Name another member of the group (can you think of another food we might eat for Thanksgiving?)

 

Ask how two pictures are similar (how are pants and shirt alike?  (they are both types of clothing)

 

Ask how two pictures are different (how are green beans and pants different?)

 

 

 

COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES:

Ask your child yes/no questions about the picture.  Is this                a turkey?  Do we eat turkey?  Do you wear a turkey on your head?

 

Place 4 pictures in front of your child and ask him/her to point to the one you name.

 

Place 4 pictures in front of your child and ask him/her to point to 2 in a row (point to the pants and the turkey)

 

Place 4 pictures in front of your child and ask him/her to point to the one you describe (point to the food that is green)
